Environmentally Preferable Products

SCS offers a certification program for Environmentally Preferable Products and Services (EPP) to address the growing demand for products that have the least impact on the environment. Program development followed Executive Order 13101, which directs federal agencies and their contractors to identify and purchase products designated as "environmentally preferable." SCS uses a combination of techniques to establish environmental preferability, including life-cycle impact assessment (LCIA), risk assessment, and environmental resource-based studies, combined with
knowledge of "best available"
technologies and practices.

SCS standards address a wide range of products, serving industrial, business, building and construction, manufacturing and residential customers. SCS's focus is on product groups in which significant environmental improvements are attainable.

  • Adhesives and Sealants
  • Cabinetry and Casework
  • Carpet (Broadloom and Tile)
  • Carpet Face Fiber
  • Composite Panels Products (MDF, Particleboard, Hardboard)
  • Doors, Interior and Exterior
  • Electric Power Generation
  • Electric Power from Renewable Sources
  • Electric Power Technology/ Operation Upgrades
  • Flooring (non-woven)
  • Furniture (Modular Systems)
  • Paints (Architectural and Anti-Corrosive)
  • Wall Coverings

Each environmentally preferable specification undergoes a rigorous certification process that:

  • Addresses all stages of the product/ services life-cycle;
  • Incorporates all environmental and human health issues relevant to the category; and
  • Undergoes rigorous outside expert review.

This program complies with internationally recognized ISO-14000 standards, the US EPA guidelines for environmentally preferable products, and US FTC guidelines for responsible environmental labeling.
