Environmentally Preferable Products

Two Ways of Recognizing Exceptional Performance

For two decades, SCS has been working behind the scenes to help manufacturers to attain their environmental performance goals and communicate their success stories. †As an experienced practitioner of life-cycle assessment (LCA), SCS is now able to provide scientific, third-party certification that takes into account the full ‘cradle-to-grave’ consequences of a product’s manufacture, use and disposal. This certification is consistent with SCS-002, the emerging national standard for LCA metrics, and conformant with ISO-14044 international LCA requirements.

1. Certified Declaration of Reduced Impact

A Reduced Impact Product demonstrates significant environmental benefits over its entire life cycle as compared to the typical ‘baseline’ product, or compared to its historic performance where no other baseline is available. No significant environmental tradeoffs — areas where the product’s environmental impact exceeds the baseline — are permitted. †A Declaration is prepared which details the product’s performance in each impact category.

2. Certified Environmentally Preferable Product (EPP)

An EPP product is a Reduced Impact Product that has successfully reached the threshold of across-the-board impact reduction to be recognized as ‘environmentally preferable’ in its product category. This threshold is established by multi-stakeholder consensus. †EPP products are eligible to be labeled in recognition of this achievement.
