Recycling System Certification
Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) certifies practices at recycling and reclamation facilities and programs so recyclers can make credible, science-based claims about their diversion rates and recycling rates. This certification recognizes leading organizations for their efficient and effective handling of materials, diverting waste from landfills and helping to reduce the amount of virgin materials consumed in manufacturing.
Businesses that benefit from this certification include waste collectors, reclamation facilities, building demolition operators, and recycling plants.
This certification qualifies recyclers and reclamation programs to:
- Make quantitative claims about the amount of material diverted from a landfill.
- Make quantitative claims about the ratio of usable material to waste sent to landfill, incineration, or permanent storage.
- Conform with the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Guides for the Use of Environmental Claims.
- Demonstrate that the materials they produce meet the material classifications requirements of the SCS Recycled Content Certification.
- Demonstrate that the materials they produce conform with the LEED “Material and Resources” criteria for recycled content in building products.
SCS certifies recycling and reclamation activities that take place in a single facility, as a part of a larger facility, in manufacturing processes and that are spread across various locations. This includes pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled content.
