Recycled Content Certification
Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) provides Recycled Content certification for a wide variety of products, including carpet, textiles, ceramic tile, composite wood products, insulation, flooring, and jewelry. All claims are certified in accordance with U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s Guides for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims and ISO-14021 standards.
The SCS Recycled Content certification is designed to help manufacturers make credible claims about their products by increasing the use of recycled materials which reduces solid waste and natural resource consumption. Launched in 1993, the SCS Material Content Certification Program is the leading program for independent third-party certification of environmental claims for manufactured goods and materials.
The SCS Recycled Content Certification Process
Products containing two types of recycled content can qualify for the SCS Recycled Content certification:
- Pre-Consumer Recycled Material
Pre-consumer material is has been diverted from the waste stream during a manufacturing process. Materials generated in a process and capable of being reclaimed within the same process (such as rework, regrind or scrap) are excluded. - Post-Consumer Recycled Material
Post-consumer material is generated by households or by commercial, industrial and institutional facilities in their role as end-users of a product that can no longer be used for its intended purpose.
SCS certification assessment consists of data gathering, a desk audit, and an onsite audit. Certification must be renewed annually through additional data collection and a desk audit. Onsite renewal audits are required when SCS determines there have been substantial changes to a process or product.
Benefits of Recycled Content Certification to Manufacturers:
- Reinforce your brand image with on-product labeling using the recognized SCS logo.
- Attain bottom-line cost savings with material efficiency.
- Assure regulators and customers your certified products are held to rigorous standards.
- Products containing a certain percentage of either pre-consumer or post-consumer recycled material can help meet the criteria for LEED MR 4.1 or MR 4.2.
