Biodegradable Certification

Biodegradable

Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) provides certification for biodegradable liquid products such as cleaners, degreasers, detergents, and soaps. To be certified biodegradable, 70% of the product formula compound must, under aerobic conditions, break down into carbon dioxide, basic salts and water within 28 days.

The Biodegradable Certification is designed to verify that products degrade safely and efficiently under worst-case circumstances and that chemicals are not entering the environment at such a rate that they reach harmful concentrations before degradation can occur.

The SCS Biodegradable Certification Process

Certification assessment consists of laboratory testing, data gathering, and a desk audit. SCS collects data on the product’s ingredients and formulation then reviews scientific literature, chemical manufacturers’ data, and independent lab results to determine if the product is biodegradable.

The laboratory test results are reviewed for toxicity to aquatic life, oxygen depletion, and eutrophication. Certification must be renewed annually.

Benefits of Biodegradable Certification to Manufacturers:

  • Reinforce your brand with on-product labeling using the recognized SCS logo
  • Assure consumers your certified products are held to rigorous standards
  • Differentiate your product by aligning your company with the leader in environmental certification
