Forest Management Certification

With an eye to maintaining the world's forestlands for the benefit of future generations, evaluation of forest land management under the SCS Forest Conservation Program focuses on the long-term sustainability of the forest environment, including the human dimensions of that environment.
For each certification audit, an interdisciplinary evaluation team of experts in forest science and management is assembled. The team typically includes SCS staff and contract consultants with regionally-based expertise in relevant disciplines (e.g., forestry, sociology, biology-ecology, economics, wildlife, etc.).
The team employs a structured evaluation process based on sound principles of decision science. Teams employ the FSC Principles and Criteria to evaluate the three "pillars" of exemplary forest management: timber resource sustainability, forest ecosystem maintenance, and financial and socioeconomic viability.
In addition to a field audit, evaluation of these factors involves the review of information provided by the client. This information may include timber inventory data, long-term timber management plans, wildlife surveys, business management plans, and employee records. Team members also consult with regional stakeholders as part of the evaluation process. The assessment team uses a consensus based decision making approach to determine if there is overall conformance with the relevant standards, and as such whether or not to award certification. In the event that certification is awarded, a public summary of the certification report is posted on the SCS website.
