Retailers, Distributors, and Institutional Food Service Providers
Health and wellness starts in the produce department, and SCS is working directly with retailers and distributors to test and certify the nutrient density of key fresh produce items in accordance with the requirements of the national Nutritional Labeling Enforcement Act (NLEA). Many popular produce categories, as well as mixed product offerings (e.g. fruit salad) can be certified through targeted buying programs backed by product testing, and through retailer/grower partnerships.
Through participation in the SCS Certified Nutrition Rich™ program, supermarkets and distributors can:
- Steer consumers toward food products that deliver the highest nutrient density per serving, making it easier to meet the 2005 US Dietary Guidelines
- Gain a competitive edge by promoting products with proven high levels of nutrient density.
- Reinvigorate sales of targeted fresh food items.
Institutional food service providers, such as hospitals and schools, can also utilize this service to fine-tune their buying operations by establishing and monitoring compliance with minimum nutrient density specifications.
