Organic Labeling

The NOP includes specific labeling requirements that apply to raw, fresh products and process foods that contain organic ingredients. Foods that are sold, labeled, or represented as organic will have to be produced and processed in accordance with NOP standards. There are four labeling categories:

  • 100% Organic
  • Organic (95–100% organic ingredients)
  • Made with Organic Ingredients (70–95% organic ingredients)
  • Made with organic [specified ingredient] (e.g., blueberries)

Each category has specific requirements for what is allowed on product packaging. For more detailed information, review the USDA’s Organic Labeling Fact Sheet.

The sample cereal boxes above illustrate the four labeling categories. From left: cereal with 100 percent organic ingredients; cereal with 95-100 percent organic ingredients; cereal made with 70-95 percent organic ingredients; and cereal, with up to 70 percent organic ingredients. The makers of the cereal with up to 70 percent organic ingredients may list specific organically produced ingredients on the information panel of the box-but may not make any organic claims on the front of the box.
