Marine Fisheries Certification Program

The SCS Marine Fisheries Certification Program recognizes "well-managed" fisheries that conform to international sustainability standards of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

Fisheries that demonstrate management operations that maintain healthy populations of targeted species, protect the integrity of ecosystems, and balance biological, social and commercial interests can achieve certification. Certified fisheries are entitled to use the distinguishing MSC logo and SCS cross and globe for identification in the marketplace, and are well poised to meet the growing demand for sustainable seafood.

SCS was the first certifier to become accredited by the MSC. Since becoming accredited in 2000, SCS has certified more than 2 million metric tons of fish.

SCS is also fully accredited by the Marine Aquarium Council to certify:

  1. Practices of the marine aquarium trade including industry operators, facilities and collection areas; and
  2. Aquarium organisms.

Through its certification program, SCS ensures that marine fishes and invertebrates sold throughout the marine aquarium trade are sourced, handled, transported and maintained in a responsible and sustainable manner.

Dr. Chet Chaffee directs the SCS Marine Fisheries Certification Program. He brings vast knowledge in biological and environmental sciences and is an expert in certification of Marine fisheries, as well as conducting species impact assessments and habitat disruption studies.
