Sustainable Aquaculture Certification: Aquaculture Stewardship Council

SCS intends to offer certification to the Aquaculture Stewardship Council's (ASC) Standard once accreditation is achieved. The ASC will be the world's leading certification and labeling program for responsibly farmed seafood.

Aquaculture producers and fish farm operators may seek certification to the ASC Standard.

Benefits of Sustainable Aquaculture Certification

  • Assure buyers of your company’s commitment to sustainability
  • Gain a competitive edge by meeting buyer demand for certified sustainable seafood products
  • Secure seafood for the future
  • Protect the marine environment
  • Safeguard jobs through good management practices

Wild fisheries may be certified under the Marine Stewardship Council Standards.

There will also be a chain of custody component to the ASC standard once the ASC is operational and SCS will also certify sustainable seafood companies to the ASC Chain of Custody Standard.

About the ASC

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council is an independent not-for-profit organization founded in 2009 by World Wildlife Fund and The Dutch Sustainable Trade Initiative to manage the global standards for responsible aquaculture. The ASC will work with aquaculture producers, seafood processors, retail and foodservice companies, scientists, conservation groups and the public to promote the best environmental and social choice in seafood. The ASC is expected to be in full operation by mid 2011.
