Environmentally Preferable Electricity Program™

Some of the greatest opportunities for environmental improvement lie in the energy sector. Through a combination of energy conservation measures, new technological advances, and innovative procurement initiatives, the environmental impacts from energy consumption can be substantially reduced, and result in considerable cost savings.

The SCS Environmentally Preferable Electricity Program™ was established to support a fair and accurate assessment of electricity options. Designed in accordance with international standards and consistent with US government guidelines for environmentally preferable procurement, it is an environmental accounting approach that:

  • Assesses all electricity generation options on a level playing field.
  • Measures environmental improvements accomplished through installment of advanced technologies and operational practices.
  • Encompasses the full range of environmental issues related to power production.
  • Conveys the relative scale of improvements achievable through various improvement strategies in order to encourage maximum improvements.

Through this program, SCS is working with power producers, marketers, customers and policy-makers to reduce the impacts of electricity. Together, we are able to optimize electricity production and delivery through advanced technologies, more efficient operating practices, and the use of new energy generation options. Programs resulting from this collaboration include the SCS Environmentally Preferable Electricity Portfolio™ and the SCS Environmentally Preferable Electricity Sources™.

To ensure that electric power production, purchase, and policy decisions result in measurable environmental improvements, it is crucial that these decisions be made on the basis of sound, scientific information. SCS’s reputation for independence bolsters the credibility of its Environmental Preferable Electricity Program.
