Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody
SCS is a leading provider of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) chain-of-custody certification, having certified more than 1,000 clients in 31 countries. FSC promotes responsible management of the world’s forests through the development of voluntary, internationally recognized forest management standards and the most widely recognized forest certification program, globally. The FSC certification program supports biodiversity, protects streamsides, ensures protection of high conservation value forests, assures consideration of human benefits, provides for stakeholder input, and ensures long-term timber supplies.
As consumers increasingly demand responsibly-sourced materials, the FSC trademark adds value and opens new markets for your certified wood products.
SCS established its Forest Conservation Program in 1991 to provide certification services for forest managers and the forest products industry, making it one of the world’s first certification programs to recognize responsible forest management practices. Subsequently, SCS was among the first certifiers to become duly accredited to offer FSC-endorsed certification services and we remain a leader in this industry.
The FSC requires that all manufacturers, distributors, and retailers who purchase and sell FSC certified wood, and who wish to make a claim about the certified status of their product, undergo chain-of-custody certification by an accredited third party. For products used in the building industry, this certification is also necessary to earn USGBC LEED MR credit 7.
SCS chain of custody clients include primary manufacturers such as sawmills, pulp and paper mills, plywood and veneer mills; secondary manufacturers such as millworks, casework, and furniture makers, paper converters and printers; and, distributors, brokers, and wholesalers of FSC-certified products.
